Caleb Butler, at Holy Cross College student in Year 6, competed in the State under 13 Epee Fencing competition last month. His coach, Cathy Morris, gave us this commentary about his competition:
‘Caleb settled into the competition well, scoring five victories in poules, placing him in 2nd place at the end of the preliminary round.
He had a convincing controlled win, in his first direct elimination, putting him into medal contention. His next direct elimination he gave us all a little scare, coming from 7-9 down, to win the bout 10-9.
In the Gold medal match, Caleb was feeling nervous and exhausted after several hours of fencing. It takes a lot of physical and mental endurance to get to a Gold medal match! Caleb gave it his all, but on this occasion his opponent was just a touch ahead, Caleb walking away with a fabulous silver medal. An amazing achievement at his first state competition.
So congratulations Caleb!’
