At a function held on Tuesday 11 February 2020 at the University of Western Australia, James Evans, a former student and 2015 Dux at Holy Cross College in Ellenbrook, was announced as the 2019 winner of the prestigious Dr Vincent Harry Cooper Memorial Prize for his dissertation, Generalised Polygons and their Symmetries.
The Prize is awarded annually to the student who has submitted the most outstanding dissertation in gaining the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy with First Class Honours. The BPhil (Hons) is the University’s flagship undergraduate degree and the Prize honours the memory of Dr Vincent Harry Cooper, a foundation Board Member and Chairman of the Western Australian Faculty of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and pioneering General Practitioner Obstetrician in Western Australia. Dr Cooper lived in Peppermint Grove and Cottesloe and was a member of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.
James spent twelve months of his four-year honours course studying mathematics at University College London. Following his award of the Prize he departed Western Australia to commence a PhD at Newcastle University in New South Wales.
Holy Cross College is immensely proud of James’ achievement and we wish him well as he commences his doctoral studies.
