Fathers Day
This week, as we celebrate Father’s Day, I have been reflecting on the profound impact that fathers and father figures have on the lives of our young people.
Regardless of a child’s age, the presence of a caring, consistent, and encouraging father figure can be life-changing. Fathers, grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers, mentors, coaches, and trusted family friends all play an important role in helping young people develop confidence, resilience, character, and a sense of belonging. In a world where our children are navigating increasing complexity and uncertainty, positive adult role models have never been more important.
For me personally, Father’s Day is my favourite day of the year. As the Dad of five children, I see parenthood as one of life’s greatest privileges and blessings. The joy comes not from the gifts or celebrations, but from the opportunity to walk alongside my children as they grow, learn, make mistakes, and discover who they are called to be. While being a parent brings its fair share of challenges, it also provides countless moments of pride, laughter, gratitude, and love. It is a vocation that continually teaches me about patience, humility, and the importance of simply being present.
These reflections resonate strongly with the work we are undertaking through our new Year 9 Rite Journey program. The Rite Journey is designed to support students as they transition from childhood towards adulthood, helping them develop self-awareness, responsibility, resilience, and a deeper understanding of who they are becoming. Central to the program is the belief that young people flourish when supported by meaningful relationships with positive adult role models and mentors. The program intentionally fosters connections between students and trusted adults who can encourage, guide, and affirm them during these formative years.
At Holy Cross College, our commitment extends beyond academic achievement. We are dedicated to forming young men and women of courage, compassion, integrity, and faith. Programs such as The Rite Journey remind us that the transformation from adolescence to adulthood is not something that occurs in isolation. It takes families, educators, mentors, and community members walking alongside our young people, helping them discover their strengths, navigate challenges, and recognise their God-given potential. The important role played by male mentors, alongside the influence of mothers and other significant adults, cannot be understated in this journey.
As we celebrate Father’s Day this weekend, I extend my sincere gratitude to all fathers and father figures within our Holy Cross College community. Thank you for the example you set, the sacrifices you make, the encouragement you provide, and the love you so generously share. Your influence reaches further than you may ever know.
