The first steps are always the quiet ones- the soft crunch of damp leaves underfoot, the mellow breeze drifting through the canola fields, the sun warming the horizon as the Camino Salvado begins. At first, it feels like just another walk. But somewhere along the kilometres…it isn’t just a walk anymore, something changes. The ache disappears in our legs, our heart warms as we laugh with our friends, and the rolling plains that fill the horizon speak to us; remind us of the beauty in embracing the opportunities we have as students to live a life filled with the happiest of memories.
The Camino is just one of the many opportunities we have as students to live life to the full. From our first days in Junior School to the moment we step into Year 7, we’re reminded that ‘life to the full’ isn’t just a motto – it’s a way of being encouraged in each of us.
It’s easy to hear phrases like “make the most of your time here,” but as students, we know that living fully isn’t about doing everything for the sake of doing everything. It’s about how we choose to do the things we do. Our creativity, our individuality, and the way we express ourselves mean that embracing opportunities looks different for everyone.
But across the board, life to the full is found in the moments that carry meaning; the friendships that lift us, the peers who walk beside us, and the community that gives purpose to our actions. A life well spent comes from embracing opportunities with gratitude and belonging- because at the end of the day, it’s never just about the destination. It’s about the people we journey with along the way.
Aliyah sees this truth in her own experiences- in the activities, the moments, and the memories that have shaped her time at Holy Cross.
Opportunities to live life to the full are woven through every part of our College. Through Enrichment, NEAS, ACC, and the Arts, students discover talents they never knew they had and passions they may have never explored. For Aliyah, volleyball has been one of those spaces: a place where challenge meets joy, and where growth happens quietly through commitment and connection.
Even the days spent on the Camino carry their own kind of fullness. The reflection, the silence, the conversations, and the simple act of walking become memories that stay with us long after the kilometres fade. These moments remind us that life to the full isn’t always loud; sometimes it’s found in being present.
It’s easy to let opportunities slip past out of fear or hesitation. But when students choose to share their gifts with the community, something powerful happens- their courage inspires others, and our culture grows stronger because of it.
And we think this is the true heart of living life to the full. When we as students embrace our opportunities with our community beside us, something shifts, somewhere out there, someone else is compelled to do the same. Our courage becomes a spark for theirs; our willingness to step forward gives others permission to follow. In that shared movement, we cultivate the brightness of our own lives and help shape a community where compassion and courage grow naturally.
As we continue walking our own paths through Holy Cross, may we keep choosing gratitude, courage, and community – and may we keep giving life to the moments that make our journey full.
