The Arts in Action: Bringing Life to the Full
This fortnight, our Holy Cross College community has been blessed to witness the transformative power of the Arts through two outstanding productions: the Senior School Production Our Town and the Junior School Musical The Enchanted Bookshop. Both performances were remarkable in their own way, showcasing the extraordinary gifts of our students and bringing to life our College Mission of empowering young people to have Life to the Full. The centrality of this mission within our College story continues to inspire all that we do
Our Town was a powerful and thought-provoking production. The maturity, commitment and skill demonstrated by our Senior School students across the four performances was exceptional. Thornton Wilder’s timeless message is a profound reminder to cherish the beauty and significance of ordinary life and to truly appreciate each moment we are given. For those of us fortunate enough to see the production, its message resonated deeply. In many ways, it reflected our own College vision of being a community of transformation in the spirit of the Risen Christ and our call to embrace life with gratitude, purpose and hope.
At the other end of the College, The Enchanted Bookshop was a joyful celebration of creativity, imagination and youthful enthusiasm. Our Junior School students lit up the stage with their energy, confidence and talent. The production beautifully embodied our Enrichment Pillar, which encourages each person to receive their God-given gifts with gratitude, cultivate them responsibly and share them lovingly with others. Through opportunities such as music, drama and performance, we seek to instil in our students a lifelong love of the Arts and an appreciation of the beauty, creativity and human connection they bring to our lives.
These productions also remind us that the Arts have never been more important. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape our world, the uniquely human qualities of creativity, imagination, empathy, storytelling and emotional expression become even more valuable. Technology can assist us in many ways, but it cannot replace the shared experience of a live performance, the courage required to step onto a stage, the connection between performers and audience, or the emotion that comes from a story told by human hearts. The Arts help our young people develop the skills and dispositions that will enable them to thrive in an increasingly complex world.
Productions of this scale do not happen without the support and dedication of many people. I would like to sincerely thank all of our students, staff and parents who contributed so generously to the success of both productions. Whether performing on stage, working backstage, helping with costumes, rehearsals, set construction or supporting from the audience, every contribution helped bring these productions to life.
A special thank you must go to Mrs Miller for her outstanding leadership of Our Town and to Ms Jackson for her dedication and passion in bringing The Enchanted Bookshop to our community. Their commitment, along with the efforts of many staff members, has provided our students with experiences and memories that will stay with them for years to come.
At Holy Cross College, we believe that education is about much more than academic achievement. It is about helping each student discover their gifts, develop their talents and find opportunities to share them with others. Over the past fortnight, our students have done exactly that. Through music, drama and performance, they have inspired us, brought joy to our community and shown us once again what it means to have Life to the Full.
